THE USE OF THERAPEUTIC LASER IN ACUPUNCTURE
Therapeutic laser, LLLT (Low Level Laser Therapy) is a tool that allows the activation of acupuncture points as part of a traditional Chinese medicine treatment.
During an acupuncture session, it is possible to use the laser alone or in combination with needles, only the duration of the treatment differs depending on the method chosen.
The laser is as effective as the needle and, depending on its power, it brings additional energy to the acupuncture treatment.
The use of this treatment instrument is interesting because it is painless, without any risk of infection and is suitable for children, adults and seniors. It is also suitable for people who are sensitive to punctures.
It does not induce side effects or complications and allows the use of points that are sometimes difficult to access with a needle or for a treatment located in an area of acute pain.
Laser acupuncture treatment is an effective, painless and quick treatment method, accessible to all.
I use a class 3B laser, approved by Health Canada, it is an infrared laserpen of 808 nm, 500mW.
The RJ-Laser equipment that I currently use in my practice was designed and manufactured in Germany. RJ-Laser has been designing medical laser equipment for over 30 years.
Laser stands for "light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation". In traditional Chinese medicine, light at a specific wavelength is used to stimulate an acupuncture point.
The photons of light trigger photoreceptors on the cells to convert light energy into cellular energy. The result is an increase in the production of oxygen and ATP. This increase in cellular energy stimulates systemic biochemical responses, including increased circulation and microcirculation, increased nerve cell action potential, increased collagen synthesis (wound healing), balanced immune function and mediation of pain signals. As you can see, laser light provides general stimulation of the entire body.
In traditional Chinese medicine, the effects of laser light can be translated as follows
increase of the dynamism of the Qi, its setting in movement
increase of the microcirculation in the meridians and surrounding tissues
activation of the respiratory chain, which increases cellular metabolism
rapid elimination of blockages in the meridians
increase in lymphatic drainage
elimination or reduction of pain.
Some details about laser acupuncture
During the session, the patient and the therapist wear special glasses to protect their eyes.
The patient can remain seated in the chair or choose to lie down while the acupuncture points are stimulated and treated one by one.
At the end of the treatment, as after a traditional acupuncture session with needles, the patient may feel a little tired.
Laser acupuncture treatment is not offered to pregnant women.
It should be noted that studies tend to show that the laser, used outside the points located under the navel, is safe for pregnant women and their babies.
However, as a precautionary measure and while waiting for recognized clinical trials, I do not use the laser on pregnant women.
Certain conditions require an adjustment of the laser dosage (very light or very dark skin, certain medications, etc.), do not hesitate to contact your therapist to find out if you can receive laser acupuncture treatment.
