New Specialization Offered: Perinatal Care, Mother and Baby

Perinatal osteopathy is a manual therapeutic approach that supports pregnant women, infants, and sometimes parents during the period surrounding pregnancy, childbirth, and the baby’s first months of life. This practice is based on the idea that the body possesses self-regulatory capabilities and that certain mechanical or functional tensions can disrupt its balance.

For pregnant women, osteopathy primarily aims to relieve discomforts related to the physiological changes of pregnancy. The techniques used can help reduce lower back pain, pelvic tension, ligament pain, digestive issues, or breathing difficulties caused by postural and hormonal changes. Osteopathic care can also help improve pelvic mobility and overall comfort before childbirth.

After birth, osteopathy may be offered to the infant to assess and treat certain tensions that may result from pregnancy or childbirth. The most common reasons for consultation include sucking difficulties, breastfeeding challenges, torticollis, reflux, colic, or certain cranial asymmetries. The manipulations performed on the baby are gentle and adapted to the baby’s developmental stage.

In the postpartum period, osteopathy can also support the mother’s recovery by helping to rebalance the structures strained during pregnancy and childbirth. It can help relieve pelvic, lower back, or scar-related pain, while promoting better functional recovery.

Perinatal osteopathy is generally used as a complementary approach to standard medical and obstetric care. It does not replace medical care, but can support the well-being of both mother and child when performed by a trained and qualified professional.
